Remember how I said a few days ago how I’m so proud of Mizar???!?!?! Well, that’s because he’s the 2012 Denver Arthritis Walk Dog Honoree!!
My puppy! The puppy who adores the Arthritis Walk, gets spoiled rotten, and is just a fun guy to be around, is the DOG HONOREE!!!
With that, I leave you his adorable story, written in his own words. 😉
My name is Mizar, I’m nearly 4 years old and I’m a black lab. I have two brothers, Phoenix and Cent. We’re lucky because our parents adopted us at the same time. Don’t let them fool you though…I’m the Alpha Pack Leader, except for mom and dad, of course! We have a lot of fun together when we go on long walks, take multiple trips up to the mountains, play fetch, and get into mischief.
My story hasn’t always been so wonderful. At 20 months old, my brothers and I escaped out of the backyard and ran straight for one of our favorite spots, the park. A car traveling at about 40 miles an hour hit me and took off. I don’t know how, but I dragged myself out of the road. Phoenix ran home to tell Dad and Cent stayed with me. Next thing I knew, I was at the emergency vet. My mom and dad were there too, petting me and telling me everything was going to be okay.
That was just the start to a long journey. My lungs were punctured, my liver was damaged, and my pelvis was broken in three places. After extensive surgery, I now have five screws in my left hip and had my hip socket completely removed and replaced. I went through months of rehabilitation, including walking to keep my new hip joint moving.
I remember my mom sitting down with me, looking me straight in the eye, promising me “We’re in this together, you and me – both with hip issues. I get your pain. We have to walk – for each other.” At that moment, I knew I was going to be okay.
After a long recovery, I’m happy to report I now run and play just like I did before the accident! But due to that traumatic injury, I developed arthritis and I will deal with pain for the rest of my life and eventually lose mobility. I don’t let that or anything get me down.
Mom kept her promise. She gets that extra motivation, puts on her tennis shoes and grabs the leash. Of course, I’m really excited just to go on a walk, but I know that I really need it, too.
So, I guess you could say I’m pretty lucky! I’m really lucky that every May my mom and dad take me, and only me, to the Denver Arthritis Walk at Washington Park. Did you know that the Arthritis Walk raises funds for vital research, programs, and services in the prevention, control, and cure of arthritis and related diseases? IT’S TRUE!!
Please don’t tell my brothers the real reason why I go to the Denver Arthritis Walk! Please don’t tell them that I get spoiled rotten! I receive all the dog-approved treats that I can consume, receive undivided attention from my parents, meet new friends, and get a puppy massage. Oh, I love those puppy massages!
Save the date for Sunday, May 20th and bring your friend to this year’s Arthritis Walk so I can say hello! I’ll be the black one enjoying the dog area. Don’t forget to register and start fundraising, too.
*weeps* I’m such a proud MOM!!
