2nd Anniversary – A Spa Treatment for Pennies

Today is my 2nd blog anniversary. As a way to celebrate, I thought I’d share this DIY recipe by this amazing lady named Michelle who just started writing blogs about her experiences in hopes to share her knowledge with others. I always love supporting new bloggers and just had to try her recipe.  I LOVE IT!! If you need a little more TLC in your life, definitely give it a try.

Hi!! I’m Michelle. I work at a spa called Skana, in a small town in upstate NY! I’ve just started writing blogs about my experiences in hopes to share my knowledge with others. I am seeking out new ways to provide tips and tricks for women who can’t afford the luxury of the spa to feel that same sense of luxury right in their own home for a fraction of the cost.
Now, as the daffodils are starting to pop up and the sun starts to peek thru the clouds we scurry to get the golf course at Turning Stone prepped for the men and the spa ready for the ladies. The spring is full of things to look forward to, whether its wearing tank tops and sunglasses, an outdoors wedding, or a backyard BBQ. However, it’s time to think about the skin you’ve been hiding under layers of clothes all winter, or you’re bound to be playing golf in a long sleeve, attending a wedding with a turtleneck and hiding your toes in your winter boots. To make sure your skin is silky smooth and ready to be kissed by the sun, enjoy this DIY recipe that is inspired by ingredients used at Skana spa, where I work.
Every spring I make myself this yummy brown sugar scrub that smells and feels so good, it’s like a mini-vacation in a jar. Best of all, it’s easy and inexpensive to make and really good for your skin.

  • 1 c Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 c oil (Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, or Vegetable Oil)
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E Oil (You can buy oil or cut open gel caps)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla (the real stuff)
  • 1 Tbsp Honey
Combine wet ingredients first, then add dry ingredients and mix well.
See, didn’t I tell you it was easy? Now, put it into a pretty 14-16 ounce jar that seals tightly. You can make all kinds of variations on this recipe. Just remember what each ingredient does for your skin before you change it too drastically.
The sugar gently exfoliates as it melts on damp skin, but either brown or white granulated sugar will work. The oils moisturize your skin and the honey adds an extra boost to that moisture. You can choose from the list of possible oils- anything that feels and smells good to you. Some people think the honey makes the scrub too sticky but it is full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that should help combat signs of aging. I think the vitamin E oil is vital, too, because it is a well-known tool for fighting wrinkles, scars, and brown spots. The vanilla adds a yummy scent. It’s my personal favorite, but you might like citrus or peppermint, for that pick-me-up feeling or lavender for a nice calming scent. I experiment every time I make up the recipe.
Now comes the spa part of the treatment: Lock yourself in the bathroom when you have fifteen minutes alone. Remember, you are creating a spa experience. Light a candle or two if you like. Open the jar and breathe deeply of the lovely scent you have chosen for your scrub. Dampen your skin, or take a hot shower, and then rub dollops of the sugar mixture in gentle circles all over your body. Take your time. It’s like a mini-massage. Convincing your spouse or significant other to scrub your feet can be fun, too. Rinse thoroughly. Enjoy your glowing and healthy skin that’s ready to be touched by the sun and glow all spring.

Thanks again Michelle for this wonderful recipe.  I couldn’t believe how easy it was myself, but what I loved most about it was how luxurious I felt.
