Pompeii, Italy

The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum was many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 feet of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. By the time of its destruction, its population was approximately 11,000 persons, and the city had a complex water system, amphitheater, gymnasium and a port.

The objects that lay beneath the city have been well preserved for centuries because of the lack of air and moisture. The artifacts provide an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana.  peachypains.com | Travel | Pompeii

The blocks in the road allowed pedestrians to cross the street without having to step onto the road itself which doubled up as Pompeii’s drainage and sewage disposal system. The spaces between the blocks allowed the vehicles to pass along the road.

During the excavation, plaster was used to fill the voids between the ash layers that once held human bodies. This allowed one to see the exact position of the person was in when he or she died. Creepy…but fascinating. peachypains.com | Travel | Pompeii

The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline on the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Province of Salerno in Southern Italy. A popular tourist destination for the region and Italy as a whole, usually attracting thousands of tourists annually. You may recognize it from Pinterest since it’s one of the most popular travel pins around. I showed Mr. P those Pinterest pins and said “I want to go there”. So we went… 🙂 To say it was STUNNING AND BEAUTIFUL would be an understatement. I was in heaven as we drove with our windows down on the narrow streets, smelling fresh lemon, lime and lavender. I can still smell the sea coast, 4 months later…
